About the Artist

Ken Lumbis

Ken Lumbis is a multi-faceted artist who lives in the City of Grande Prairie. He has worked in stained glass and wildlife photography. However, his most recent focus is in clay sculpture and pit firing. Pit firing pottery has had a long tradition. Ken puts his own interpretation on this tradition by adding different materials and using fire to create organic patterns across a ceramic landscape. Along with pit firing, Ken is also a brilliant ceramic landscape artist and uses Mason Stain coloured clays to create colourful impressionistic sculptures that have the texture and movement of the natural world around him. Ken had a long career as a biologist studying small bird and waterfowl populations. This appreciation of nature shines through in his work in his beautiful abstracted Canadian landscapes. Ken’s work can be found in many private and public collections around Alberta including the Grande Prairie Hospital Foundation and Alexander Forbes Public School in Grande Prairie. Ken has exhibited in many shows, some of which were with the Alberta Craft Council and with Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition program. He also worked at Grande Prairie Regional College as the Studio Technician for the Fine Arts Department. Ken has his own studio where he loves to create.
