Nan Swanston has been passionate about drawing and painting since childhood. A largely self-taught fine artist, she has continually honed her skills through various workshops over the years. For more than 30 years, Nan has been an active member of the Grande Prairie Guild of Artists, where she has enjoyed the camaraderie and encouragement of her fellow artists. Alongside the guild, she has participated in numerous exhibits and sold many paintings throughout the region. Over the years, Nan has contributed to several art-related initiatives, including the magazine publication Art of the Peace and its annual symposiums, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, and Alberta Arts & Culture Days in Grande Prairie. Nan’s favorite medium is watercolor, particularly watercolor batik. However, she also works in oil, mixed media, pen and ink, and watercolor illustrations. Drawing inspiration primarily from nature and landscapes, her work reflects her deep connection to the world around her. Nan’s art education includes courses from Robert Guest at GPRC and workshops with notable artists such as Jim Adrain, Janice Robertson, Jean Pedersen, Marney Rose Edge, David Langevin, Suzanne Sandboe, Brittney Tough, and Brent Laycock, among others. These experiences have been invaluable in enhancing her technique and artistic vision. In 2000, Nan graduated from GPRC with a diploma in Digital Design (with distinction), marking the beginning of a 21-year career in graphic design. This background in design has had a lasting impact on her artwork. Since retiring, Nan has embarked on a new creative path, focusing on traditional art and children’s illustrations—an endeavor inspired by her adored grandchildren. Her venture, artforlittleones.ca, reflects her love for creating art for young audiences. Nan works from her home studio in Grande Prairie, Alberta, where she lives with her husband and their golden lab.
