Description

Bear Hill Spruce is the first new piece since the opening of Stories in Stone at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.
Made specifically for the Art Auction on April 25, Bear Hill Spruce wraps up what has been an intense 2 month stretch since the show opened. I just wrapped up 2 straight weekend teaching courses and just today was invited to talk at GPRC, a highlight for me.
Bear Hill Spruce is what I would define as a typical/classic sculpture of mine. Black tree with a brown base. This style of tree is also my favorite style to do, I love the lines, the visual poetry in the way that I interpret an artist like Lawren Harris.
As I have mentioned before I occasionally hide features or characters in this piece, this is one and the title easily gives it away. As always the characters are very abstract. The best place to view the hidden character is in the top 2 images.
As a “bonus”, if the art auction committee allows, the winning bidder will be invited to my home and studio for a tour (idea borrowed from Ken Housego) and we will treat our guests to a supper as my wife Rhonda is a spectacular cook and her cooking is an art form.
I will also have news in the coming weeks regarding many different projects and events. One is I have been granted a $1500 grant from the City of Grande Prairie to do a large scale tree sculpture, this time out of metal. When complete is will stand as tall as 12 feet high. I’m excited about that project to see where it leads
