Astina and the White Bison Calf – Book Two

Astina’s tribe is set for the big Bison hunt at sunrise but a lightning strike ignites prairie fire and burns the tribe’s camp and leaves everything in ashes. Winter is coming and without food, clothing or shelter and no hunting tools, they must get all of these fast. Astina sets out on a journey to find enough supplies to help her tribe survive the coming winter.

Astina is a young Indigenous girl with the gift of communicating with her animal brothers and sisters. The story is set on the prairie east of the Rocky Mountains in a world before the Europeans landed on Turtle Island.

Author/Storyteller Grant Berg shares this children’s story inspired by the character of his Indigenous Grandma with exceptional illustrations by Calgary based artist Phoebe Riel. The story book illustrations are shown on a large screen for the audience to follow along. The stories’ animal characters have their Cree names, an introduction to basic Cree language. 35 minutes
