Astina and the Quest for Medicine – Book One
Set precontact in what is now Alberta, Kokum has fallen ill and it is up to her granddaughter, Astina, to get the life saving medicine which grows on the other side of the mountains. Astina has to overcome many challenges and obstacles to get to the other side of the mountains and back in time to save her Kokum.
Astina is a young Indigenous girl with the gift of communicating with her animal brothers and sisters. The story is set on the prairie east of the Rocky Mountains in a world before the Europeans landed on Turtle Island.
Author/Storyteller Grant Berg shares this children’s story inspired by the character of his Indigenous Grandma with exceptional illustrations by Calgary based artist Phoebe Riel. The story book illustrations are shown on a large screen for the audience to follow along. The stories’ animal characters have their Cree names, an introduction to basic Cree language. 25 minutes
