About the Artist

Valerie Spence Hounsell

Valerie is a landscape painter with a deep appreciation for the diverse panorama of rural Canada, and a desire to convey her personal experiences to the viewer. Though she has painted since she was a child, she launched her full-time career as an artist in the fall of 2019 while successfully curating an outdoor art show featuring over 20 exhibitors, including herself. Valerie has always had a love of the outdoors, but it was during young adulthood, while living in rural Ontario, that she began to understand the role that the environment would play in her work. Later in life kayaking became her primary source for inspiration, and to date, her pieces mainly focus on the waterways of the Canadian landscape. Her passionate portrayal of the granite shores, quiet inlets, and the rushing waters of the glacial melt are her signature pieces. The Canadian landscape is her passion and the driving force behind her work. She imagines the divine aroma of the pine needles on the forest floor, the warmth of the sun on her face, or the soothing sounds of water lapping up onto the shore as she paints. While strategically applying acrylic pigment, she uses colour to create the suggestion of shape, light, and shadow. “The world is filled with beauty – and, what I call, interpretive realism, seeks to connect our senses to the majesty of our Canadian landscape.”
